Capacity Building and Technology Transfer

Throughout the third project phase (2006-2009), capacity building is being given a high priority to ensure the successful transfer of the project outputs to local stakeholders.

Training is provided to experts, who will work with and further develop the VB-WAS (Volta Basin Water Allocation System).

This transfer also implies fostering long-term and reliable collaboration between the VBA (Volta Basin Authority) and other organizations with an interest in research based development, e.g. the United Nations University, GTZ (German 'Gesellschaft fuer Technische Zusammenarbeit'), and the European Union.

A training course in Hydro-Meteorological Decision Support for the Volta Basin was held at the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA) in Accra, Ghana, and at the Direction Générale des Ressources en Eau (DGRE) in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The transfer of the developed methodologies enables the local meteorological services to predict the Onset of the Rainy Season (ORS) in different regions of the Volta Basin. The developed methodology is generic and can be transferred to other regions of the world that are strongly influenced by monsoonal seasons.
